The Contest of Pleasures Trio

John Butcher - saxophones
Xavier Charles - clarinet
Axel Dörner - trumpet

The Contest of Pleasures trio was formed in 1999 after Xavier Charles' initiative. They have given concerts in France, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada and UK and have released three albums so far. In 2005 they extended their project under the name The Contest of More Pleasures which basically involved the exploration of different locations by performing in places such as factories, forests, tunnels, cafes etc.
Although a purely acoustic trio, they are known for the electronic quality of their sounds.

Mark Corroto writes about their performance in their first album:
"The trio favors a kind of ambient surface to work against minimalistic improvisations. One of two artists paint a tone upon which the others react. Perhaps it is the situs of this recording (a church) or the weather (extremely hot) that bridles the philosophy of this session. It is only on the “Loganberry” that they venture into a bit of noise, raising the volume and intensity of interaction, with various clicks, whistles, and rattles from the players. But mostly this recording is about a comteplative interaction, a quiet freedom."
