John Butcher - Gerry Hemingway

John Butcher - saxophones
Gerry Hemingway - drums

Although John Butcher and Gerry Hemingway first played together in 1993 in Georg Gräwe's GrubenKlang Orchester, it wasn't until 2000 that they started performing as a duo. Sharing a common background in jazz and avant-garde, their style is characterised by an impressive attention to detail, particularly obvious when it comes to sonic imitations between Butcher's saxophone and Hemingway's cymbal manipulations.

Mark Corroto writes about their performance in their album Buffalo Pearl (released by Auricle Records):
"The combination if Butcher's extended saxophone techniques and Hemingway's tactile expression—be it on drums, adding a bit of sampling, voice, or brushes—keeps things stimulating throughout. As Butcher flutters through "The Good Neighbor," Hemingway drives the drums at a breakneck pace and with an electronic pop and sizzle boiling. The pair relies on the faithful technique of tension and release, and noise and silence; all with an overarching transparency of purpose and clarity of sound."

Gerry Hemingway is a composer and percussionist who has worked professionally since a very early age in the jazz and bebop scene. Consequently, as an improvisor he draws influences from jazz music, but also rock musicians such as Hendrix and Jeff Beck, as well as avant-garde composers such as Luciano Beri, played a big role in developing his unique style.
