John Butcher - saxophones
John Edwards - double bass
John Butcher and John Edwards have been playing together since 1997 both as a duo and in several other combinations including musicians such as Pat Thomas, Chris Burn and Rhodri Davies. Their style is characterised by a physical approach to their instruments with the sounds often blending to the point that is difficult to tell who is playing what purely by listening to the music.
Richard Cook and/or Brian Morton write about the duo's performance in their album Optic (released by Emanem):
"A classic. Though this instrumentation might seem puny next to some of the adventures with electronics and the like, Edwards' intense physicality on the bass gives the music huge weight, and Butcher responds with his most forceful and detailed playing. Cocktail Bar is a single 27-minute piece, recorded in Brussels, while four pieces from the following year were set down in Barcelona. The Brussels set is headlong, while the more elliptical Barcelona pieces (especially the fascinating drone of Grottes 1) are a superb counterweight."

John Edwards is a very prolific improvisor and a virtuoso double-bass player, based in London. His impressive range of performance techniques bring forward the instrument's sonic possibilities both in his solo and group improvisations.
