There is a number of experimental, jazz and improvised music that take place regularly around the world and which have hosted performances by john Butcher and his collaborators. A list of the most important ones follows:

London Musician's Collective Festival of Experimental Music
The London Musician's Collective has been active on promoting and supporting experimental and improvised music through a range of activities (concerts, publications, radio broadcasts, etc.), among which the LMC Festival of Experimental Music. Unfortunately, due to funding cuts by the Arts Council of England, the last time the Festival took place was in 2009. Cafe Oto had hosted this festival.

Fete Quaqua
Quaqua is the name used for a collective of improvising musicians. Although not a festival, the series of events they organise once a year under the name Fete Quaqua is an important contribution in keeping the improvised music scene alive. Vortex Jazz Club hosts Fete Quaqua.

Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival
HCMF is an annual international event of new and contemporary music, hosting a range of events, such as concerts, talks and multi-media events. The John Butcher Group was formed especially for HCMF 2008, and the album Tempestuous by his John Butcher's trio The Contest of Pleasures was recorded live at HCMF 2006.

Saalfelden Jazz Festival
Saalfelden Jazz Festival is one of the most important jazz festivals in central Europe. John Butcher and the RED Trio have performed a few times in this festival.

The Hurta Cordel Festival is organised by a collective of artists associated with improvisation and artistic interaction and takes place in Madrid every year.

Vancouver Jazz Festival
This festival is organised by the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society in Vancouver. John Butcher has given concerts several times there with his trio Way Out Northwest and also with Gino Robair.

Freedom of the City Festival
"In the 2000s, Emanem joined forces with Eddie Prévost's Matchless label to present Freedom of the City, an annual improvised-music festival in London. Though its size and scope vary from year to year depending on funding, it has continued as an annual event, with many of the recorded performances issued on either Emanem or Matchless."
