Computer scientist Bill Hsu and John Butcher met in 2003 while working together for the creation of a software tool for timbre recognition within Butcher's playing. Their collaboration for scientific purposes eventually evolved into a performance duo and in 2006 they gave a concert at the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie.
